words the general populace seem to misunderstand:

squareguru:

  • privilege
  • consent
  • misogyny
  • misandry
  • psychotic
  • schizophrenia
  • bipolar
  • gender
  • gender role

PRIVILEGE is a wonderful one though. people seem to think privilege on a political or sociological basis is based upon the number of people who make up a demographic. people think you are only disprivileged if you are constantly isolated or physically oppressed. negative worlds can be reinforced through positive emotions. oddly enough, that’s how abuse works much of the time.

People also seem to think gender and misandry are real things. :O

Claiming that people who use the term bisexual must be touting a rigid binary view of gender, or denying the existence of gender variant people, is as presumptuous as assuming that people who use the term “bicoastal” must be claiming that a continent can only ever have two coasts, or that they are somehow denying the existence of all interior, landlocked regions of that continent.

I don’t play video games for the strong female characters. I don’t play video games for the strong male characters. I play video games for strong people. I play video games for their stories. Gender doesn’t matter. Being a living, breathing, feeling being matters.

#I JUST HAD TO GET THIS OFF MY CHEST #I SWEAR IF I SEE ONE MORE POST ABOUT HOW MY FAVORITE LADIES ARE STRONG CHARACTERS #SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY ARE A BADASS WOMAN #I’M GONNA HURT SOMEONE #fuck gender shouldn’t matter #you as a person should matter

I disagree. In a wonderful, perfect world gender shouldn’t matter, but it does. It does, and pretending it doesn’t is putting your head in the sand. I think we’re at a critical point in video game development where creators need to start seeing that yes, people legitimately enjoy women characters  who are fucking badasses (and will buy the game specifically BECAUSE they exist in it) and no, making characters like that will not make the game tank or whatever stupid shit people say. So every time I see a video game doing it right, you sure as hell will hear me praise the game and rec it to people specifically based on things like having a well developed female character. And I hope eventually there will come a day when said well developed female characters are the norm rather than the exception.

sex positive rugrats!*The Rugrats parents allow Tommy and Chuckie to wear dresses because “they’re not just for girls”*In Betty & Howard’s relationship, the gender roles are reversed.  Same in Drew & Charlotte’s relationship.
*Charlotte, Angelica’s big business mama, occasionally alludes to the importance of female empowerment:
* Throughout the series, it is often highlighted that Phil & Lil, although identical twins, are treated differently because of their gender.
*Charles/”Chaz” proudly takes on the nurturing role of single dad and challenges traditional masculinity.
*In fact, most the characters bend gender in one way or another!

Best thing about this is, when I was a kid and watched the show, I didn’t really see anything out of the ordinary with any of this.

This show was the best

Teachers are often unaware of the gender distribution of talk in their classrooms. They usually consider that they give equal amounts of attention to girls and boys, and it is only when they make a tape recording that they realize that boys are dominating the interactions.

Dale Spender, an Australian feminist who has been a strong advocate of female rights in this area, noted that teachers who tried to restore the balance by deliberately ‘favouring’ the girls were astounded to find that despite their efforts they continued to devote more time to the boys in their classrooms. Another study reported that a male science teacher who managed to create an atmosphere in which girls and boys contributed more equally to discussion felt that he was devoting 90 per cent of his attention to the girls. And so did his male pupils. They complained vociferously that the girls were getting too much talking time.

In other public contexts, too, such as seminars and debates, when women and men are deliberately given an equal amount of the highly valued talking time, there is often a perception that they are getting more than their fair share. Dale Spender explains this as follows:

The talkativeness of women has been gauged in comparison not with men but with silence. Women have not been judged on the grounds of whether they talk more than men, but of whether they talk more than silent women.

In other words, if women talk at all, this may be perceived as ‘too much’ by men who expect them to provide a silent, decorative background in many social contexts. This may sound outrageous, but think about how you react when precocious children dominate the talk at an adult party. As women begin to make inroads into formerly ‘male’ domains such as business and professional contexts, we should not be surprised to find that their contributions are not always perceived positively or even accurately.
